Why are these changes being introduced?
The equipment that is used to record weather conditions and the system used to process the data are obsolete and need to be modernized. This includes implementing a more reliable way to measure winds and to be able to issue reports of weather conditions more quickly, which is especially important during rapidly-changing weather.

Why are daily data not available for these stations?
Currently, the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) and NAV CANADA are working together to resolve some issues in the processing of the new data format received from these sites. As a result, daily data for the new sites will not be available on Climate Data Online. The alternate stations listed above can provide you with daily data for these locations. We ask for your patience until these issues hav been resolved.

When do you expect to have these problems corrected?
These issues are currently being addresses and are of high priority. We hope to have them resolved as soon as possible.

Will the historical climate data be permanently lost?
The weather data is being captured at these two locations and it will be entered into our climate archives to ensure an unbroken record of weather and climate info.

Will all locations be changed?
These are the first two sites to be upgraded in Canada; over the next 5-6 years the new system will be implemented at roughly 200 stations across Canada.

Who owns / runs these observing sites?
These weather observing sites are owned and operated by NAV CANADA in support of aviation needs. The MSC works closely with NAV CANADA to use the weather reports from these sites to fulfill its needs (for example, for issuing public forecasts and warnings), and to make available to the Canadian public via WeatherOffice.gc.ca and climate archives websites.

I have further questions, who do I contact?
Please contact our National Climate Services office at climate.services@ec.gc.ca.

Hourly data is now being displayed for several new partner stations on Climate Data On-line.

In late June of 2009, several airport stations began to switch over to new partner maintained and operated automatic weather stations. Due to a new format, hourly data from these stations were not initially displayed online. We are happy to announce that Archive software has now been updated to store and display these data.

All new partner stations are assigned new Climate ID's and names, but keep their legacy TCID (Transport Canada ID). At present, we are working on updating the metadata of these new stations. We recommend that if you are searching for data for a station that ends between 2009 and present, please use the "Nearby Stations with Data" link in the Navigation Options box at the bottom right of the data page, to determine whether there is a corresponding station available with current data.

Future updates will occur for some stations to ensure all data is archived and displayed correctly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at climate.services@ec.gc.ca.

As of November 19 2009, changes have been made to how Wind Chill and Humidex values are calculated. A detailed outline of these calculations can be found in the Glossary.

Expand the message

Wind Chill and Humidex:

As of November 19 2009, changes have been made to how Wind Chill and Humidex values are calculated. Previously, Wind Chill was calculated using an equation that required a wind speed of at least 10 km/h and an ambient air temperature of 0°C or less. This implied that there was no Wind Chill for wind speeds of less than 10 km/h, which is not accurate. As a result, a new equation was introduced for wind speeds greater than 0 km/h but less than 5 km/h, and the wind speed threshold for the original equation was lowered to greater than or equal to 5 km/h. The ambient air temperature threshold of 0°C or less has remained the same for both Wind Chill calculations. These two methods of calculating Wind Chill have also been adopted by the Weatheroffice.

The equation used for the calculation of Humidex has remained the same, however, the value used when converting from Celsius to Kelvins for dew point temperature has changed. Previously, the temperature in K was determined by adding 273.1 to the temperature in degrees C. The value of 273.1 has been changed to 273.16 to ensure greater accuracy.
